    Dear members:

While at the grocery store earlier this year I was surprised to see a huge display of products containing CBD with promises that the product can cure many things.  And then this week the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued warning letters to 15 companies that sell CBD products because the products violate federal law. The agency also issued an update to consumers about the popular products, and stressed that there is limited evidence for their safety or efficacy.

That got me thinking about CBD and I am interested in hearing from you about what you are seeing and what concerns you might have.

What questions do your clinicians have about CBD and its use by consumers/clients?

Are you seeing increased use of CBD products to manage symptoms of SUDs or MH issues?

It looks like this industry will continue to expand, what do we need to consider in the future around regulation of marketing, advertisement, and sale to promote public health and patient safety?

I look forward to hearing from you!

Our experience is that most clinicians and providers remain confused and those eligible to prescribe very reluctant to prescribe given the lack of research, the concerns about liability, etc.  Iowa has restricted use of CBD to only 5 sanctioned State approved dispensaries and only MD's can prescribe it for a narrow list of conditions.  That said, CBD is popping up at Family Videos, vending machines and other locations in our community that has ingredients in it that no one knows about.  The State Board is now discussing it's use in Iowa for PTSD which is even more concerning given the number of patients who are requesting this from MH providers.  ANY guidance from NCCBH's Medical Director Institute would be greatly appreciated.
