Good afternoon Association Executives - I am reaching out with a time sensitive opportunity, seeking your advice and input.
Early in 2020, National Council joined the attached amicus brief (PDF) in the opioid multi-district litigation (MDL) with the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Ohio. The amicus urged accountability in the use of abatement funds that come through this litigation.
Now, there is another important opportunity in the Purdue Pharma case. In the Purdue Pharma bankruptcy, potentially tens billions of dollars will go into a National Opioid Abatement Trust (NOAT), which would need to be used exclusively by state and local governments to abate the opioid crisis. While the intention is to have these funds support ADDITIONAL services, that is by no means guaranteed.
The attached short amicus brief (word doc) has the same aims as the previous amicus. Specifically, this amicus supports the National Opioid Abatement Trust but calls for states and local governments to ensure appropriate protections are in place to ensure abatement funds supplement, not supplant existing funding.
DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY, JULY 14 at 12 PM ET.
Thanks,
Michael
