  • 1.  therapy limits using prior auths - 10/31/22

Dear colleagues - In MN, our state BH Division is trying to impose limits on outpatient therapy visits using prior authorization requirements.

MACMHP and partners are trying to make the argument to remove the limits and prior auths.

Does anyone have data, state policy, or know of research that speaks to the efficacy of no therapy visit limits you can share, please?

    Jin:

This is unbelievable.  MN officials need to understand that this issue was put to rest in the 1990s.  Even in the earliest days of BH managed care, the most profit-focused companies realized that limiting opt visits simply increases ER visits and admissions (and costs).  Every company eventually dropped outpatient pre-authorization.

I'll look for data, but better yet ask for a legislative hearing.  I ran an MCO for 17 years.  Chuck and I can come in and testify!

Good luck and I'll see what I can find.
