  • 1.  Practices on Hiring Former Patients

We are reviewing our eligibility guidelines related to hiring former patients and would like to get some input from the provider community on how others are approaching this topic.
    1. To be eligible for employment, do you require that a specific amount of time has elapsed from the date of discharge from services?
    2. Does that timeframe requirement differ when hiring individuals with lived experience for peer support positions?

    Thank you in advance!

    Hello,

As a peer run most of our employees were patients/members with either our organization or one like us. We do not require a certain amount of time before employment. If a member is expressing interest we encourage them to volunteer in that department and take any classes that might be necessary for employment while still a member. This way they continue to have strong supports while working towards employment. If the volunteer experience went well and all training requirements are met, we move on to discussions about staff policies and rules. Such as social media and boundaries. Many of the members form strong friendships and we have strict guidelines of professionalism between staff and members and we work to insure that the member understands they would no longer be able to have other members on social media or go to events with members outside of work if they become staff. Sometimes it's not a concern for the member and they are ready to move forward. More often we help the member find employment elsewhere so they may maintain their friends and peer support network.

    Best wishes,

This is a great question and I think you have broken it down accordingly
The peer specialist position s across the states has specific criteria, training g and certifications. Perhaps this is a starting point for your decisions. If you would like to see what is done in Pa we would be happy to pass that along

An example of hiring former patients based on real-time based evidence:

Peer-Recovery coaches can play a vital role in real world practicum for their assigned recovering clients.  State and local Social Services frequently hire these now-stable persons to aid the recovery of individuals trying to pull away from addictions. They themselves have been stable and free of substance for a minimum of 18 months.

After the peer recovering training, they begin volunteering with an assigned recovering client.  Because of the coaches' real-time experiences, they can aid very well, due to personal experience with similar Co-Occurring symptoms.

This is an example of specific hiring for specific needs.

    Well Regards,
