    Dear Association Executives – HHS' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has announced its first-ever behavioral health Recovery Innovation Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to identify and elevate innovation practices developed by individuals, groups, and organizations or within state systems that advanced recovery. This challenge will allow participants to share details about innovative practices and models being used to promote recovery on the ground and to demonstrate how these innovations have expanded upon SAMHSA's definition and overcome challenges in incorporating recovery into their services or systems.

    Key things to know:

    • Who is eligible to apply: Peer-run or community-based organizations must be the primary participant, including peer-run and community-based tribal organizations. Additionally, tribes, treatment centers, prevention and early intervention organizations, local and state health departments, health systems, hospitals, health plans, and academic medical centers can be part of teams with peer-run or community-based organizations that participate as a group.
    • Award information: This challenge competition will offer up to ten awards for a total of $400,000 across awards.
    • Application timelines: Applications are due by July 15, 2022 through the SAMHSA Recovery Challenge Innovation Page. Finalists will go through a judging process with final awards made in October 2022.
    • Application guidelines: Applications should describe the recovery innovation and its impact via a written submission of less than five single-spaced pages. Each applicant must involve people with lived experience in the development of the submission. Detailed guidance is included on the SAMHSA Recovery Challenge Innovation Page.
    • Award information: This challenge competition will offer up to ten awards for a total of $400,000 across awards.
