A few of our staff say their internet providers are going to limit their data plans and charge more above a certain threshold. Obviously, with almost everyone working at home a lot of the use is work-related. My inclination is to compensate people for any extra costs they incur, but a senior staff member is pushing me to give a flat amount to everyone (we do that for their personal phone usage). I see that as (i) unnecessary, as some are not incurring additional costs, and (ii) different in kind, as the phones are theirs but we provide their laptops.
Has anyone implemented a policy concerning compensation for home internet use?
(as a side note: when I started I learned that the advocacy staff was getting paid for their lunches at the Legislative Office Building. I find that ridiculous, but I have let it stand because the impact on our overall budget is just a few thousand dollars and they are probably not paid enough as it is.)
