The National Council is honored to be embarking on a 3-year engagement with The State of Hawaii's Department of Human Services to improve the shelter system for people diagnosed with severe mental illness and co-occurring disorders. This is a two-pronged approach to update existing shelter practices and operations, as well as develop a new and innovative shelter model. This is also an opportunity to leverage the innovations and solutions of our vast membership and inform the work in Hawaii to improve the services for the homeless population. Please join us in this vital cause by sharing your thoughts and ideas here and please let us know if you would be interested in a follow-up call.

    Thank you!

While I do not deal directly with the "homeless" (on the streets) population, I am working with co-occurring individuals, some of whom do not have a home and "couch surf" as a result of their addiction and difficulty in socialization due to their SMI. I appreciate this opportunity to collaboratively discuss this issue and ways in which we can be the "hands and feet" to those who are suffering. While I do not have any ideas/thoughts at this moment, I do want to offer my appreciation for what is going on with Engage/National Council for Behavioral Health. I look forward to hearing from others and offering suggestions. Thank you!
